For those with Android phones, a concern that may be weighing on your mind is about security. As laptops and computers move over to smartphones for everyday use, the danger of something infecting your lifeline becomes more of a reality each day. Malware, spyware, and viruses have an equal opportunity to be loaded on your phone, especially given the open access to android’s programming code.
But have no fear! There are tools out there to help protect this lifeline like you protect your laptop or computer at your home & office with antivirus, anti-malware, and anti-spyware to protect your phone. Here is a list of 5 FREE (best kind of price) that are available for download to your android phone (or tablet of course!)
1) Avast Free Mobile Security – warns if you visit a malicious site or are about to download a program that could compromise your information on your phone. You can set it up to automatically scan your apps (including your SD card).
It also has a neat Anti-Theft option that you can rename (so a thief won’t catch on if they get in) and it is of course password protected itself. You allows you to remotely locate your phone (forget it while shopping much?), remote alarm (oops, fell threw a couch cushion), remote locking (“If found, please return to:…”), and remote wiping (so your info stays OUT of the wrong hands). Before you start to sweat from the thought of losing all your data, it allows you to back up you phone over the air first. You’ll be able to see it on your notification bar (the bar at the top of the phone).
Some downsides are a few features REQUIRE 3G (cell phone signal) and won’t work over Wi-Fi only devices (think Wi-Fi only tablets). Also the remote access feature requires a text message from another phone and no website support for this yet (coming sometime this year).
2) AVG Mobilation Anti-Virus Free – protects against malware (downloading from app store) and browsing protection (when you’re surfing the web). Scans your text messages to make sure they’re safe. Also includes remote access to locate, alarm, lock, wiping and scanning like Avast.
For $1.99 more (1 time fee, don’t worry) you can add an app locker that can password protect individual apps. This might be a handy app for parents to purchase so that kids don’t accidentally mess with mom & dad’s important apps.
The app won’t appear on the notification bar and is confusing to navigate when you open it. AVG does provide website remote access feature unlike Avast software.
3) Lookout Mobile Security – malware protection, contacts backup, remote locating & alarm for both phone and tablet. To get browser protection, app privacy manager, and other features that are included for free from AVAST & AVG, you have to pay a monthly or year subscription fee ($2.99/mo or $29.99/yr).
Malware protection does include scanning apps on the phone, just not on the SD Card. Website support for the premium subscription to locate, wipe, etc is solid should you choose to pay. You are able to schedule scans on the free version.
You will see the app on the notification bar by default.
4) Norton Mobile Security Lite – A name many are used to from their home computer. The $29.99/yr is where most of the features will be coming in. Malware protection and remote locking is on the free version. For the subscription you get browser protection, remote alarm, remote camera control (that might be a fun feature should you lose your phone), and remote wiping. This is first one of them so far that has mentioned remote camera control. Fun thing to have, but would you really use it?
Scheduling is available (daily, weekly, monthly). Remote functions for the free version are through text commands; while the premium version let you use a website.
5) NQ Mobile Security – anti-malware, browser protection, firewall, cross-platform contact backup, and remote locating via Google Maps. Also includes a privacy advisor that analyzes apps & their permissions, tracks data usage (key if you have a monthly data limit) and app optimizing manager. For those that use a sim card (AT&T, T-Mobile and any LTE device on Verizon) it will automatically alert when the sim card is changed to a safe number (such as a friend)
The premium version will definitely be something to consider in the coming years as technology progresses and we add our credit card information on it to pay for everything as quickly as possible. For $19.99/yr (other options available) will add a malware scanner designed to scan bank apps and anti-eavesdropping protection as well as automatic anti-virus updates.
NQ Mobile will sit on the notification bar and is easy to use when you open it. You can schedule scans for every week or 2. Some features you need access to at least 3G so some tablets won’t be able to access those features remotely.
Each has its advantages depending on what you need either for personal preference or work security. For everyday users, AVAST may be the best option. If you do use your phone a lot for banking, paying the extra $20/year would be well worth protecting your banking identity. Camera control is a fun option; just think about if you’re going to remember to use that when your phone is lost. Don’t forget you can’t put in a reminder on your phone to remember to use it when your phone is lost.
Make sure to be ahead of the curve when it comes to malware and viruses and install now. Getting into the habit now will save you time (and money) in the future from lost data, stolen data and lost time.
